Background

Mr P is a 65-year-old living alone in a 1-bed bungalow in Colwick. He brought this home in 2021 but soon started to struggle with the cold, damp, and mold. With him having asthma, the conditions of his home was a concern. He looked for help online and discovered Nottingham Energy Partnership, he called us and we assessed him to see what schemes he could qualify for. Through this call it was discovered that him home is off gas, and his main source of heat was through electric heaters and coal. This, along with his EPC and low income, allowed him to be put forward to Home Upgrade Grants 2 (HUG2) and Healthy Housing.

National Grid’s Priority Service Register

While completing the telephone assessment, it was identified that Mr P is eligible for the National Grid’s Priority Service Register (PSR) through Healthy Housing. This service ensures that vulnerable homes receive advanced warnings of planned electricity interruptions, are prioritised for reconnection, and are given this priority information or support as necessary. Mr P would benefit from this additional safety net due to his age.

Solid Wall Insulation

In May 2023, Mr P received external wall insulation on his property through the Home Upgrades Grant scheme, funded by Nottinghamshire County Council. Mr P saved £14,257 on the installation cost, as well as an additional £550 on his energy bills a year, saving an average of £14,807 in total. As the greatest portion of heat loss occurs through the walls of a property, the installation has had a significant impact on the Energy Performance of Mr P’s home. The installation raised the rating on his Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) from an F to a high D. When asked about his experience with the scheme, he said “My home was very cold with lots of mold but I was so used to it I didn’t notice it unless people came round and commented. My home smelt bad due to the damp and mold, but I can already see a big improvement. My energy bills have also come down.”

Air Source Heat Pump

Through HUG2 Mr P was also put forward for an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) as a replacement for a gas boiler in his off-gas property. ASHP’s allow for off-gas properties to have a similar experience to that of an on-gas property, with central heating and a hot water cylinder – it is also significantly more eco-friendly, and in some cases, can be cheaper than the alternatives. When Mr P got his Air Source Heat Pump he found that the home became significantly warmer, with the condensation and damp not being an issue anymore due to the constant warm temperature. He also said “My bills have gone down since getting the insulation, but since getting an Air Source Heat Pump I have noticed them go up again. But I am okay paying that as the house is better for it, and it has improved my health.”

What Mr P thought of Nottingham Energy Partnership

“I would definitely recommend Nottingham Energy Partnership to others, they were really clear and the process was straight forward, whenever I asked a question I got a thorough answer, I couldn’t have asked for more. My home has improved, and my health has improved. I’m very happy.”
